thyroid ultrasound anchorage

This procedure examines the thyroid gland, parathyroid glands and lymph nodes in the neck.

Several Common Indications for the Exam:

  • Enlarged thyroid
  • Palpable nodule
  • Abnormal lab tests

What to Expect

You will be asked to lie on an exam table with your neck slightly extended. A Registered Sonographer will apply a small amount of gel to the neck and place an ultrasound probe near the “Adam’s apple”. Varying degrees of pressure may be necessary to obtain the desired images of the thyroid.

Exam Preparation

No preparation necessary. You may be asked to remove any necklace or low hanging earrings you may be wearing. It is best to wear a tank top or shirt with a wide collar.

Test Results

In emergent cases, or if requested by your referring provider, a preliminary report of findings will be provided immediately following the examination. Final reports are typically available in the morning of the next business day.
