Scans performed in the third trimester are usually requested to evaluate fetal growth. Special attention is given to the fetal size, amniotic fluid, placenta, and blood flow through the umbilical cord. Re-examination of the brain, spine, heart, kidneys, bladder, stomach, bowel, abdominal wall, face, and sex are also performed. Common reasons for the exam included uterine size/date discrepancy, history of prior large or small baby, diabetes, and high blood pressure. A third-trimester scan may also be requested to follow up on findings seen on an earlier scan.
A fetal echocardiogram is a detailed examination of the fetal heart that may be performed in the third trimester.
