A hernia occurs when an organ or fatty tissue squeezes through a weak spot in a surrounding muscle or connective tissue called fascia. Four of the most common types of hernias can be readily evaluated using ultrasound imaging. These are located in the groin, umbilicus (belly button), abdominal wall, or at the incision site from prior surgery. Ultrasound provides a way to image in real-time while the hernia protrudes through the defect using maneuvers such as standing or bearing down to increase abdominal pressure.
